© The Art of Door 2012 A Note from Brad... I started writing The Art of Door just after graduating from the University of Utah.  My time spent in college influenced my philosophy on life, and for that reason I chose a college campus for the setting.  I wrote the first chapter, “Study Group,” during that first winter.  A Decade of Writer’s Block I didn’t contribute much of anything beyond the first chapter for several years.  Rather, I concentrated on building my business and raising a family.  I’d pull up the file and edit the “Study Group” chapter once or twice a year, I wrote the prologue of Harry and Wug, but I didn’t add much more than that.  I never felt the crave nor a defined direction, so I never put much effort into it.  Maybe that decade was a blessing.  I had a professor say that it’s best to put several year, or even decades, between an experience and creatively writing about it.  Though The Art of Door is nothing but fiction, I did draw on past emotions, and if I had tried to write it while feeling it, it would have likely dragged down the flow. Someone’s Murdered It was around 2001 when I dedicated myself to finishing my book, and that’s when I finally killed someone.  Okay, I didn’t actually commit murder, but I did finally introduce Nancy’s murder into the book.  Without it, my context was only entertaining to me; with it, I could capture the interest of others.  Never underestimate the power of murder. Finishing Up In 2006, I finally finished the meat of the story.  I still needed to get it edited and published, but the bulk of the work was finished.  In November 2011, I got the final editing work done, and in November 2012, I got it published. Now, I can finally start working on my next project.  I hope it doesn’t take another twenty years. -Brad
